Aughinish Alumina: Where the Shannon meets Siberia
This is a NAFO campaign #Alumina21
Our mission is simple: That the EU add the export of Alumina to the 21st Sanction package
Bauxite to Bombs: The Process
Raw materials arrive by sea, feeding a tightly controlled industrial process that transforms bauxite into alumina. After unloading, the ore is refined using the Bayer process, where it is ground, heated, and chemically treated to separate valuable alumina from impurities. This extraction produces a significant by-product known as red mud, which is stored in engineered containment areas. The process demonstrates the scale, precision, and complexity of modern materials production, while also reflecting the responsibility required to handle industrial waste and minimize environmental impact alongside meeting global demand for aluminium products.
